Fluorescent Light Bulb Shapes

Fluorescent bulbs work by passing a current through a tube filled with argon gas and mercury. Bulb life is very long - 10,000 to 20,000 hours. Fluorescent bulbs are also very efficient, producing very little heat. Fluorescent bulbs are ideal for lighting large areas where little detail work will be done (e.g. basements, storage lockers, etc.). With the new type bulbs, and style of fixtures coming out, fluorescents can be used in most places around the home. Most fluorescent bulb cannot be used with dimmers. Note that fluorescent bulbs need components called ballasts to provide the right amount of voltage.

Circline Shaped Fluorescent Light Bulbs: The most common form of fluorescent lamp is a tube with two pins on each end. The diameter of the tube is described in eighths of an inch, as it is for incandescent lamps, so a fluorescent lamp 1½ inches in diameter is a T-12. The 2-pin bases (called bi-pin bases) come in several sizes, but by far the most common in homes is the medium bi-pin.

fluorescent light bulb produces less heat, so it is much more efficient. A fluorescent bulb can produce between 50 and 100 lumens per watt. This makes fluorescent bulbs four to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. That's why you can buy a 15-watt fluorescent bulb that produces the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb
