    According to the US Department of Energy, if every household replaced just one traditional light bulb with a energy-saving compact fluorescent replacement bulb, the United States would save enough energy to provide power to three million homes for a year. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (also referred to as CFLs) work by using electricity to heat mercury and argon vapor which causes the phosphor coating on the bulb to glow. This process uses much less energy than heating a filament as traditional incandescent replacement light bulbs do.

    Compact fluorescent bulbs - CFLs use this same electrical current to energize argon and mercury vapor, which stimulates a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulbs. Finding the best CFLs will depend on your unique needs; however, dimmable CFLs are often a preferred choice among homeowners because they grant users full control over light settings in the home.
