    According to the US Department of Energy, if every household replaced just one traditional light bulb with a energy-saving compact fluorescent replacement bulb, the United States would save enough energy to provide power to three million homes for a year. Compact fluorescent light bulbs (also referred to as CFLs) work by using electricity to heat mercury and argon vapor which causes the phosphor coating on the bulb to glow.
