The US Department of Energy (DOE) finalized regulations in 2022 restricting the sales of many General Service Lamps (GSLs). The regulations effectively banned the sales of most lamps with lower efficacy levels, in this case 45 LPW. Per the regulation, a General Service Lamp is a lamp (of any technology – incandescent, halogen, LED, CFLi) that:

— Standard incandescent or halogen type lamp intended for general service applications

— Has a medium screw base 

— Has a lumen range of 310-2600 (modified spectrum range 232-1950 lumens) 

— Is capable of being operated at a voltage range at least partially within 110 and 130 volts

— Is not a light fixture 

— Is not an LED downlight retrofit kit 

— Is used in general lighting applications

The rules also exempted many types of specialty lamps:

— Appliance lamp 

— Black light lamp 

— Bug lamp 

— Colored lamp 

— G-shape lamp with a diameter of 5” 

— Infrared lamp 

— Left-hand thread lamp 

— Marine lamp

— Marine signal service lamp 

— Mine service lamp 

— Plant light lamp 

— R20 short lamp 

— Sign service lamp 

— Silver bowl lamp 

— Showcase lamp 

— Traffic signal lamp

There has been confusion on all sides regarding the timeline of this regulation. Sell-by and regulatory action level dates varied for manufacturers, importers, and distributors/sellers. As a result, LEDANCE has discontinued these product lines and we have stopped the sale of remaining inventory. 

Unfortunately, that means many of our product lines that you relied upon can no longer be sold if intended for use in the US. This is a nationwide regulation, not a state one, so the usual pass-through process we have previously utilized for specific states cannot be used in this instance. 

Fortunately, LEDVANCE has a large assortment of more energy efficient lamps that can take the place of many of the now banned GSL’s. 

We are also monitoring recently proposed regulations by the DOE and individual states that may impact some of our products in the future.
